In the recent years, more and more manufacturers of electric grills are adding a new functionality to their units – the ability to remove the cooking plates for easier cleaning. The George Foreman GRP99 grill is no exception in this matter – it has removable grilling plates that can be detached from the unit and either be manually washed with warm soapy water or be placed in the dishwasher since the grilling plates of the George Foreman grill GRP99 are also dishwasher safe.
If you ever owned a contact grill with grilling plates that are permanently attached (like the older George Foreman grills) you would appreciate the removable grilling plates of the George Foreman GRP99 grill. Although removing and attaching the plates can be somewhat tricky, it’s just so much easier when you can put the plates in the sink or in the dishwasher.
For safety reasons, each time you attach the plates you have to make sure that they are attached properly. Once you gain some experience with the grilling plates of the George Foreman grill GRP99 you will have no problem to attach the plates properly in mere seconds.
The grilling plates are probably the best improvement of the George Foreman GRP99 grill over the older Foreman grills that were quite hard to clean. However, it seems that the new design has lost some of the good old superior heating mechanism. The heat distribution of the GRP99 grill is not as good as the previous George Foreman grills – there are some hot spots that you’ll need to get familiar with, and the appliance just can’t get as hot as the older models.
Although the temperature controls of the George Foreman grill GRP99 can be set up to 425 degrees, it really isn’t recommended to use the highest possible temperatures because of a certain flaw in the heating mechanism. Apparently, the new George Foreman grilling machine cannot maintain the high temperatures for extended periods. It seems that when the George Foreman GRP99 grill gets too hot, the unit just shut off for a couple of minutes, and it can be quite annoying if it happens repeatedly.
It’s true that the next Grilleration George Foreman grill offers a large and nonstick cooking surface. However, it is not advised to overload the cooking surface of the George Foreman grill GRP99 with food, since the grill can’t cook well a lot of food simultaneously. In addition, the unit doesn’t seem to deal well with thick steaks or other thick pieces of food.
A spatula and two drip trays also come with the George Foreman GRP99 grill. The specially designed spatula should help the user scrape and clean the nonstick surface without damaging it, and the drip tray can be used to catch the excess grease. It’s recommended to let the hot grease and liquids cool before removing the drip tray from the front part of the countertop grill.
In short, it seems that the great cooking performance of the older George Foreman grills was exchanged for the easily cleaned grilling plates of the George Foreman grill GRP99. The older models were hard to clean, but cooked the food exactly how we like it. While the new design is easy to clean, it doesn’t cook the food as good as the older Foreman grills that could reach much higher temperatures and distributed the heat evenly across the surface.

Honestly, I think that this review is a bit harsh. I bought the George Foreman grill GRP99 with removable plates at Costco and have been using it for two weeks now. It’s actually quite good as an indoor grill, and you must remember that it’s not a gas or coal grill – so it’s not going to be as good as my Weber gas grill for example. But I can cook great and quick meals with it and it’s also very easy to clean.
We love our grill and the food we prepare on it, however we need drip trays to a GRP99. Can someone tell me how to order.Thanks
I have been using this George foreman grill for a couple of months and it’s fine as a grill, but far from perfect. It could be great if the grp99 grill could get hotter, however the removable plates are a nice addition that makes it easy for me to clean.
To Frances Chastain – I already received the grease catcher that you are talking about with the whole unit. If you want to get just the grease catcher you could try Ebay. I’ve already bought replacement parts before from Ebay, and I’m pretty sure you could do so as well.
I need the grease catcher to my grill which is the GRP99. Can you help?
Since I had the good old George Foreman grill for literally years I wanted to buy the old design that I already had once the grill stopped working. Well, I couldn’t find the one I was looking for and after reading a lot of reviews about the George Foreman grill with removable plates I’ll probably get a different grill (maybe a stovetop cast iron grill like a friend of mine suggested).
My advise for the Foreman company is to create a grill that can COOK first, then you can add the option to remove its plates… or bring the old Foreman grills back – they were actually worthwhile.
That’s quite weird, I have seen lots of reviews that recommended the George Foreman grp99 grill mainly because it’s the removable plates make the grill easy to clean. However, I don’t remember any reference of the George Foreman hot spot griddle, or anything wrong with the ‘evenly heated surface’…
It could be nice to see a review about the George Foreman next generation g5 vs Cuisinart griddler gr-4. I have had the Black and Decker griddle and I really didn’t like it – in short I can say that it functioned very poorly and didn’t deliver the results that I wanted. I am probably going to get the Cuisinart griddler, despite its expensive price (unlike the cheap black & decker…)
